IF YOU’RE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA AND CRAVING TURQUOISE WATER, PASTEL HOUSES, AND A SPICY MARGARITA ON DUVAL BY NOON… LET’S TALK ABOUT THE KEY WEST EXPRESS.

IT’S TRULY ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO GET TO KEY WEST WITHOUT DEALING WITH THE LONG OVERSEAS HIGHWAY DRIVE. NO TRAFFIC. NO BATHROOM STOP STRESS. YOU LITERALLY BOARD A BOAT, GRAB A DRINK, AND ARRIVE IN PARADISE.

HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BOOKING.

WHAT IS THE KEY WEST EXPRESS?

The Key West Express is a high speed passenger ferry that runs from Fort Myers Beach or Marco Island and Straight to Key West.

The ride is about 3.5 to 4 hours depending on conditions. You leave in the morning and return the same evening, or you can book one way and stay for a few nights.

It gives mini vacation energy without all the airport chaos.

WHERE DO YOU LEAVE FROM?

Fort Myers Terminal | Located at 1200 Main St, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931.

This is the more popular departure point. If you’re Cape Coral / Fort Myers based, this is your spot. Parking is available onsite for a daily fee. Get there early during peak season.

Marco Island Terminal | Located at 951 Bald Eagle Dr #2303, Marco Island, FL 34145.

Is a slightly shorter ride than Fort Myers. Great option if you’re Naples or Marco based.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Pricing varies by season but expect roughly:

  • $165 to $200 round trip for adults

  • Discounts for kids and sometimes Florida residents.

Book in advance during busy seasons like spring break and holidays.

ARRIVAL

Arrive 60 to 90 minutes early. Boarding is smoother, parking is easier, and you’ll get the seats you want. Peak season fills up fast and they will not hold the boat.

Parking | Onsite parking available for a daily fee. Bring your ticket inside to validate if required. During peak season, lots can fill quickly so early arrival matters.

Check in Process | You’ll check in at the terminal counter, show your ID, get boarding passes, and then wait to board by group. It’s very organized and surprisingly quick.

SEATING STRATEGY

Upper Outside Deck | The best views, best content, strongest wind. Bring a hair tie and sunglasses you can secure.

Indoor Upper Level | Tables to utilize, more social vibe, televisions to watch, easy bar access.

Lower Level Mid Ship | Smoothest ride if you’re worried about motion sickness.

Best Views | Sit on the left side heading south for better water views

Even though it’s typically smooth, the Gulf can surprise you. Take Dramamine before boarding if you’re prone to sea sickness. Sitting inside + center of the boat is your safest bet.

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING

  • A comfy, breathable outfit. Think travel day chic.

  • A light jacket because the AC inside gets cold even in summer.

  • Comfortable shoes. You’ll walk a lot once you dock in Key West.

  • Sunscreen is a non negotiable. You’ll sit outside longer than you expect and that Florida sun hits different reflecting off the water.

  • Government Issued ID.

  • Sunglasses for the bright Florida sun.

  • Motion sickness meds if you’re sensitive.

  • Cash or card for drinks and snacks onboard.

FOOD & DRINKS ONBOARD

Full bar, snacks, and light meals available. You can grab breakfast sandwiches, wraps, chips, etc. No need to overpack food.

The bar opens and cocktails are served immediately. Mimosas at 9 am feel completely acceptable here. Vacation mode activates the second you leave the dock!

WIFI & TECHNOLOGY

Wifi | There is no Wi Fi onboard. Cell service usually drops once you’re out on open water. Download shows, podcasts, and playlists ahead of time to have plenty to do during the trip.

Outlets | Limited outlets inside. Do not rely on finding one. Fully charge your phone before arrival especially if you plan to take lots of photos.

BAGGAGE

Size Requirements | Each bag should not exceed about 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Basically standard airline carry on size.

Larger Luggage | Allowed for a fee but space is limited. Pack light if you’re doing a day trip.

Number of Bags | Two free carry on bags per person. Think backpack & small duffel or standard airplane carry on.

Overnight Tip | If you’re staying overnight in Key West, pack one small carry on and wear your bulkier items. Makes loading and unloading so much easier.

ARRIVING IN KEY WEST

The best part? You dock right in Old Town Key West near Mallory Square. And I mean RIGHT there. No shuttle. No taxi line. No airport chaos. You walk off the boat and you’re instantly in island mode.

TRANSPORTATION

Walking is easiest since you are so close to all the action. If it’s super hot or you’re staying overnight:

  • Bike rentals are everywhere.

  • Golf carts are available.

  • Pedicabs are fun and very “Key West”.

  • Rideshare works but can surge during sunset.

Still, 90 percent of people just walk.

WALKING DISTANCES

From the dock:

  • Duval Street is about a 5 minute walk.

  • The famous Southernmost Point Buoy is about 20 minutes on foot.

  • Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is about 15 minutes.

  • Sunset Celebration happens at Mallory Square.

No rental car needed and honestly, a car would just be stressful. Parking is limited and streets are narrow.

ITINERARY RECOMMENDATIONS

My personal order of operations when arriving in Key West include:

  1. Walk straight to Duval for coffee or a frozen drink.

  2. Drop into a boutique or two.

  3. Take photos while your hair still looks decent.

  4. Head toward the Southernmost Point mid afternoon.

  5. Circle back for sunset at Mallory Square.

It’s such an easy, flowy walking day.

IS THE KEY WEST EXPRESS WORTH IT?

If you hate long drives or just want a cute day trip that feels like a tropical escape, absolutely yes.

The drive from Fort Myers to Key West is about 6 to 7 hours. The ferry lets you relax, sip something cold, and watch dolphins if you’re lucky.

It’s such a fun girls trip, birthday idea, or spontaneous date day!
