SLOW MORNINGS IN IMBABURA PROVINCE
We started day two in Ecuador slow and local, which honestly ended up being one of our favorite mornings of the entire trip. Before heading to any major stops, we spent time exploring the Imbabura Province, taking in the mountain views, quiet roads, and everyday life that makes this region feel so special.
We stopped for breakfast at a small local spot that was simple, comforting, and exactly what we needed before a full day of exploring. Fresh bread, warm coffee, and views of the surrounding mountains set the tone for the rest of the day. Imbabura was calm and peaceful, and it was the perfect way to ease into our second day.

YAHUARCOCHA LAKE
Our first major stop was Yahuarcocha Lake, a beautiful lake located just outside of Ibarra in the Imbabura Province. The name “Yahuarcocha” translates to “blood lake” in the indigenous Kichwa language, a name tied to a battle that took place here centuries ago. While the history is heavy, the lake today feels incredibly peaceful.
Surrounded by mountains, Yahuarcocha is the kind of place where you want to slow down. You can walk along the water or take a boat out onto the lake. There are also several restaurants nearby if you want to sit, eat, and take in the views. It’s quiet, scenic, and a really nice contrast to busier tourist spots.

PARQUE DEL CÓNDOR
Next, we headed to Parque del Cóndor, an animal rescue and conservation center located just outside of Otavalo. This park focuses on protecting birds of prey, especially the Andean condor, which is one of the most important and symbolic animals in Ecuador.
The park is home to condors, owls, hawks, and eagles, many of which were rescued and rehabilitated. Watching the live bird demonstrations was unforgettable. Seeing these massive birds up close and learning about the conservation efforts behind the scenes made the visit feel meaningful, not just educational. Parque del Cóndor does an incredible job of highlighting why protecting natural habitats truly matters.

OTAVALO MARKET
Afterward, we made our way to the famous Otavalo Market, one of the largest and most well known markets in South America. Located in the town of Otavalo, this market is filled with vibrant textiles, handmade jewelry, pottery, and traditional Ecuadorian crafts.
You can wander for hours here, weaving through stalls and discovering souvenirs for everyone on your list. The market is open daily, but Saturdays are the busiest when vendors from surrounding regions come in to sell their goods. No matter the day, it’s a great place to experience local culture and bring home meaningful souvenirs.
NUESTRO CAFÉ
If you're a coffee lover visiting Otavalo, Ecuador, be sure to check out Nuestro Café. This charming cafe is located in the heart of the town and offers a unique coffee experience that you won't want to miss.
The real star of the show at Nuestro Café is the coffee itself. The cafe offers a variety of brewing methods, including pour-over, French press, and espresso. You can choose from a selection of single-origin coffees, each with its own unique flavor profile.
