PACKING FOR ECUADOR CAN FEEL TRICKY BECAUSE YOU’RE ESSENTIALLY VISITING MULTIPLE CLIMATES IN ONE TRIP. FROM BEACHES AND MOUNTAINS TO RAINFORESTS AND ISLANDS. HERE’S EXACTLY WHAT TO BRING SO YOU’RE PREPARED FOR IT ALL.

PASSPORT & TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

This one’s obvious, but crucial. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months, and bring any required visas or proof of onward travel. I always keep digital copies saved on my phone and emailed to myself just in case.

WEATHER APPROPRIATE CLOTHING | LAYERS ARE KEY!

Ecuador sits on the equator, but don’t let that fool you as the weather changes fast depending on where you are.

  • Highlands & Andes | Pack warm layers like a fleece, lightweight down jacket, and a hat. Nights get chilly.

  • Coast & Galápagos | Think lightweight, breathable clothes, shorts, flowy tops, sundresses, and a sunhat.

  • Rainy Season (Oct–May) | A packable rain jacket or poncho is a must.

Pro tip | layers will be your best friend.

COMFORTABLE WALKING SHOES

You’ll be walking a lot! Through cities, national parks, lava fields, and scenic viewpoints. Comfortable sneakers are essential.

If you plan on hiking in the Andes or Amazon, hiking boots with good traction are worth the suitcase space.

INSECT REPELLENT

Mosquitoes are common, especially in coastal and rainforest areas. Bring a strong insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil to protect against bites.

SUN PROTECTION

The sun is intense here as Ecuador is right on the equator. Pack:

  • High-SPF sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • A wide-brim hat or baseball cap

Trust me, sunburn sneaks up fast.

TRAVEL ADAPTER

Ecuador uses Type A and B outlets (same as the U.S.), so U.S. travelers are good to go. If you’re coming from elsewhere, bring a universal adapter.

CAMERA, BINOCULARS & GOPRO

Ecuador is a wildlife dream. A camera is a must, and binoculars are amazing for spotting birds, sea lions, and marine life.

We also brought a waterproof GoPro, which was perfect for snorkeling and ocean adventures.

CASH & CREDIT CARDS

Most places accept cards, but cash is still important especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

Good news | Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar, so no currency exchange needed.

SMALL FIRST AID KIT

Pack the basics | Pain relievers, band-aids, antihistamines, and any personal meds.

If you’re hiking or visiting remote areas, add a whistle, flashlight, and basic navigation tools.

SPANISH PHRASEBOOK OR APP

While English is spoken in tourist areas, knowing a few Spanish phrases goes a long way and makes experiences smoother and friendlier.

A SMALL BACKPACK OR FANNY PACK

For island day trips, bring a small, comfortable bag for your essentials, sunscreen, snacks, a water bottle, your camera… all the good stuff. A lightweight backpack, fanny pack, or even a waterproof bag will make exploring so much easier.

FINAL THOUGHTS

With the right packing list, Ecuador is an unforgettable adventure, from the Galápagos Islands to the Andes and beyond. Pack smart, stay flexible, and enjoy every moment.
